Meet the Ventura Team Behind Sutton ADU Ventura
We’ve been building accessory dwelling units and room additions in Ventura since 2006, but the company name only tells you part of the story. The rest is the people who show up at your door, walk your lot, and handle your project from first sketch to final inspection. Every member of our Ventura crew is background-checked and identity-verified under The Threshold Standard. When we schedule a visit, you get the name and photo of the person coming before they arrive. That’s not a courtesy. It’s how we think a job site should run.
Our People

Miles Hartwell, Owner
Miles founded Sutton ADU Ventura in 2006 and still walks every project site personally before a written price goes out. He started in residential framing and moved into ADU-specific work when California’s accessory dwelling unit laws changed, because he saw homeowners struggling to get straight answers about what could actually fit on their lot. His specialty is lot feasibility: setbacks, utility tie-ins, and the unglamorous site conditions that determine whether a detached unit makes sense. Miles will tell you the permit timeline before he tells you the price. Outside of work, he’s rebuilding a 1968 Ford pickup, slowly enough that his neighbors joke about it.
Daniel R., Lead Technician
Daniel runs our field operations for ADU and room addition projects across Ventura, from Midtown to the east end. He’s been with Sutton for 11 years and carries certifications in James Hardie cladding installation and prefab foundation systems. If your project involves an Abodu, Cover, or Boxabl unit, Daniel is the person who coordinates the factory specs with what’s actually happening on your slab. He keeps a notebook of Ventura-specific soil and drainage notes that he’s compiled over the years. On weekends, he volunteers with a local youth baseball league and apparently never misses a game.
Elena M., Service Coordinator
Elena is the voice you’ll hear when you call our Ventura office. She manages scheduling, permitting paperwork, and the written price delivery that happens before any work starts on your property. Before joining Sutton ADU Ventura four years ago, she worked in construction permitting for another Ventura County firm, so she speaks fluent City of Ventura building department. That matters when a setback question or a plan-check comment stalls a project. Elena’s job is to keep you informed before you have to ask. She’s also the office baker, which means cinnamon rolls on Tuesdays and a strict no-walnuts policy for anyone with allergies.
Marcus T., Apprentice Installer
Marcus joined our crew two years ago through a local trades training program and works under Daniel on framing, finish work, and Mighty Buildings panel assembly. He’s currently completing his carpentry coursework and has earned his OSHA safety certification. What Marcus brings to every job is attention to the small stuff: clean cuts, tight flashing, and a habit of photographing work stages so homeowners can see what’s behind the walls. He was born in Ventura and knows the neighborhoods well, which helps when we’re navigating narrow Midtown lots or hillside access off Foothill Road. In his spare time, he’s learning to surf, reportedly with more enthusiasm than coordination.
One Standard, Every Job
The Threshold Standard isn’t a slogan we hang in the office. It’s the operating system for every person on this page. Background-checked and identity-verified before they ever set foot on your property. Name and photo sent to you before arrival. A written price delivered before any work begins, every time, no exceptions. And when the work is done, the 365-Day Done Right Promise covers defects in workmanship for one full calendar year from project completion. If something isn’t right, Sutton makes it right, including a free second visit if an element fails. No haggling, no fee, no “let me talk to the office.” Whether it’s Daniel on a James Hardie install, Elena walking a permit through plan check, or Marcus double-checking a flashing detail, the standard doesn’t change. That’s the point of having one.
